The New Essential Apps August 2012StopWatch: Running a race? Baking a cake? Somehow doing both at the same time? You can track them with this app, which lets you switch back and forth between apps, while still clocking your activities down to the millisecond. Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012Timelapse Pro: Use your phone to make beautiful timelapse movies, in a lovely Metro interface. When you're done, you can upload them to SkyDrive right from the app. $0.99
The New Essential Apps August 2012Turn by Turn: Maybe you have an awful sense of direction, maybe you don't. Either way, we all need a little help sometimes. This app gives you voice guided directions when you need them. $4.99

The Best iPad Apps August 2012

Added:
The New Essential Apps August 2012TV Guide: No need to lose sleep over your TV indecision. The new TV Guide app combines all your options into one place, showing you both what's streaming and what's on cable. It only lacks Netflix and Amazon Prime, which sucks, both otherwise you're going to have an easier time finding something to melt your brain. Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012Pinterest: Now you can pin recipes, DIY projects, pictures of dogs in costumes until your fingers are bleeding because the online bulletin board just launched on the iPad. It's the same Pinterest you know and love (unless you actually hate the whole Pinterest thing). Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012Cartoon Network: Away from your TV? You don't need it to enjoy content from Cartoon Network. In this new app you can watch live shows and play games, and even do both at the same time. However, you must be a cable subscriber. Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012Shuffler.fm: Mixtapes and videos come out all the time, but you might miss one because you're not following the most obscure of all the music blogs. This app is like a super niche Flipboard that pulls content from all kinds of music sites, so you're always up on the latest tracks. Free

The Best Android Apps August 2012

The New Essential Apps August 2012Pinterest: Pin until you can pin no more, Android fans. This month the online bulletin board launched a version compatible with Google's platform for the first time. Time to scope out some new DIY projects.
The New Essential Apps August 2012Current Caller ID: You know who's calling, but do you really know? This app from White Pages will tell you everything you want to know about the person on the other end and then some. It combines info from the phone book with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You'll have no shortage of conversation topics. Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012Gallery Lock: It's probably a bad idea to keep naked pixxx on your phone. In the event you have some snapshots you don't want falling into the wrong hands, you can hide them within different folders in Gallery Lock. Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012Scope: You tweet, you Facebook, you tumble, and you even do a little Instagrammin'. Rather than check every separate app fifty times a day, you can look in one place, Scope, a hub for all your social networks. Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012SkyDrive: Users of Microsoft's cloud storage solution got a little love this month. As promised, Microsoft launched SkyDrive on Android. The app lets you access and share all the stuff you have squirreled away. Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012Perfectly Clear: No matter how powerful smartphone cameras become, it's still possible to take a bad picture. But that image can be recovered with the simple, but powerful editing tools that this app gives you, right on your device. $0.99

The Best iPhone Apps August 2012

The New Essential Apps August 2012NextDraft: From the mind of Dave Pell, NextDraft gives you the top 10 stories of the day with a unique, witty perspective. Dave hand-picks each story and the app delivers you a new digest each day. Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012AdHawk: The closer we get to November, the more political ads we'll be bombarded with. While those TV and radio spots might sound benign, they might be paid for some totally sketchy, totally extreme organization. Ad Hawk, from the Sunlight Foundation, will tell you exactly what group is paying for them. Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012HipGeo: Instead of taking pictures on your vacation only to let them sit on your harddrive collecting whatever the digital equivalent of dust is, track your trip as you go. HipGeo lets you upload photos and text tagged with your location, so you'll never forget that little hole in the wall taco place you found or that spot that had the most perfect sunset. Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012Cardiio: You could buy one of those expensive heart rate monitors to wear when you work out like a big gym rat dummy, but why? This is a a totally free, way to track your pulse when you exercise. No extra equipment required. Free
The New Essential Apps August 2012Burner: We've all been in that hard spot where some weirdo asks for your digits, and though you don't want to give it to him, you have to because he's going to call you immediately to make sure you have his. Avoid this problem completely with Burner, an app that gives you temporary numbers that you can kill at any time. $1.99

AMD's top-end Trinity desktop chip could cost just $130, the same as a budget Core i3

You can't get a Core i3 on Newegg right now for much less than $130 -- a sum that'll put you almost at the bottom of the Ivy Bridge league with a dual-core processor, 3MB cache and HD 2500 (i.e. not HD 4000) integrated graphics. That's why it's interesting to see these leaked AMD Trinity prices over at retailer BLT. If they're accurate, they indicate that the same amount of cash might afford a top-end Trinity A10 processor with overclockable 3.8MHz quad-cores, 4MB cache and vastly superior Radeon HD 7660D graphics. At the other end of AMD's range, a dual-core A4-5300 APU could cost as little as $60. The only catch we can see -- aside from the issue of accuracy -- is that by the time these processors actually become available rival Intel may well have seen fit to adjust its own prices. In fact, Chipzilla just launched some new Ivy Bridge processors over the weekend that brought the cost of entry down to $117 -- which goes to show that nothing stands still for long. Head past the break for some official gaming benchmark claims about the A10, or see More Coverage for extras.

Arris' cable technology teases us with 4.5Gbps download speeds

Think your cable connection's fast? Arris thinks it could be a lot faster. At today's NCTA Cable Show in Chicago, the company will demo a new system that can support download speeds of 4.5Gbps, and upload rates of 575Mbps. To achieve this, Arris devoted more of its DOCSIS 3.0 cable channels to broadband (128 downstream, 24 upstream), sourced through a C4 cable module (pictured on the left). Of course, this would leave less space for conventional TV channels, but we're guessing the accelerated streaming speeds would more than make up for it. Unfortunately, the prototype is still in the proof-of-concept phase, so it may be a while before you reap its benefits. Head past the break for the full PR.

WiFi2HiFi Streams Any Audio From Your PC to iOS

WiFi2HiFi Streams Any Audio From Your PC to iOS
Windows/Mac and iOS: Apple's AirPort Express has long been an awesome way to stream music from your PC across the house, but if you don't have one, iOS app WiFi2HiFi lets you stream any audio to your stereo using your iOS device.
While you could always hook your iPod or iPhone up to your home stereo and play music directly, you may not store all your music on your iPod. Also, you can't always play other audio streams — like Grooveshark — on your iPhone. With WiFi2HiFi, however, you can stream any audio from your computer to an iOS device on the same Wi-Fi network. All you need to do is download the app on iOS and install the small desktop app on your Windows or Mac computer— that's it. Whenever you start it up on your computer, it will automatically detect your iOS device with the app running and stream all your computer's audio to it.
WiFi2HiFi is a $0.99 download for iOS devices. Its Windows and Mac counterparts are free. Quite a far cry fromthe $99 AirPort Express. WiFi2HiFi [via Wired How-To Wiki]

Gizmo5 Shutting Down April 3

Gizmo5 Shutting Down April 3
If you're a fan of free internet calling service Gizmo5, you'll likely be sad to hear some sad news from the weekend : the service, acquired by Google , is shutting down its independent operations. That means that even those who snagged a Gizmo5 login from before will lose access on April 3, 2011. Google has integrated Gizmo5's calling services into Gmail, but Gizmo5 was still a convenient option for those looking to make free desktop calls. If you have calling credits through Gizmo5, or a number you'd like to keep, you can still do so; log in at Gizmo5's transitional site for details
